Why mental health research matters
One in five Australians experience mental illness every year. Almost half of us will be affected at some point in our lives — whether personally, or through someone we love.
For many people, access to the right treatment or support remains hard to find. Without it, the effects reach into every part of life: education, employment, relationships and wellbeing. Closing that gap takes sustained, high-quality research.
About the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research
Since 1987, QCMHR has been dedicated to improving mental health outcomes for people across Queensland and beyond — growing into one of the state's leading mental health research centres, with specialist research programs, a clinical research unit and a strong community of clinicians and researchers.
Research across the full picture of mental health
QCMHR's researchers work across the full range of mental health — from understanding what causes mental illness, to developing better treatments and improving the services and systems that support people through it.
Areas of focus include First Nations mental health, forensic mental health, suicide and crisis care, child and youth mental health, military and veterans' mental health, and the intersection of physical and mental health, among others.
What your support makes possible
While Queensland Health provides QCMHR's core operational funding, our research relies heavily on competitive grants and the generosity of philanthropic supporters.
Philanthropic funding allows us to explore new ideas, respond to emerging mental health challenges, support the next generation of researchers, and undertake important work that may otherwise go unfunded.
It helps bridge the gap between promising ideas and the evidence needed to attract larger research investments. Every donation goes directly towards supporting mental health research at QCMHR.
